Musing Mondays – Something New and Presents

Catch up post – 2 weeks in one! Aren’t you lucky. Will you be buying books for the holidays, this year? If so, for whom, and why?

Er, yes. Next question.

Seriously, the current list of recipients of books includes: The Book Accumulator, Mini-Me, Pa Physicist, Bro Physicist and probably Nephews 1, 2 and 3; 5 out of my 9 cousins in Australia… Ma Physicist isn’t getting a book – she’s getting a share of a Kindle from us.

(and realistically, I’m going to buy books for them and just have to reward myself for my shopping…)

Why? Because we and they like reading? The bigger question is why are some people not getting books? Well 4 of my cousins have sent the message back via my aunt that they’d rather have jewellery/CDs, The Musician is insanely busy and I’d rather get her something she can use regularly rather than add to her stress, and The Resident Cousin already pilfers my shelves so there’s no point giving her her own books!

(to decode names, see my Dramatis Personae page)

How do you decide to read a book by an author you haven’t read before? What sort of recommendations count most highly in making that decision?

I’m really not that fussy. If the book looks interesting or has got lots of attention before, I’m happy to give it a shot. Recommendations might come from family and friends, from the internet/blogs, from magazines… or just from what’s available. I picked up The Crocodile on the Sandbank simply because it looked like a good book. I’m now trying to collect everything that Elizabeth Peters has ever written.
