The lovely people at Viking/Penguin Books in the US have got a paperback copy of Rules of Civility by Amor Towles to be given away in celebration of the release of the paperback edition. I loved this book when I read it last summer so it comes highly recommended!
To be in with a chance of winning, leave a comment below with your favourite Rule of Civility from George Washington’s original list and I’ll draw names out of a hatmug on Sunday night UK time so you have until midday Sunday GMT+1 (i.e. my local London time) to enter.
Open worldwide.
If anyone’s interested, my current favourite is “Turn not your Back to others especially in Speaking, Jog not the Table or Desk on which Another reads or writes, lean not upon any one”. It turns out that vibrations from someone jiggling their foot travel a really long way in a Portacabin.

Ha I think I must choose rule 7: 7th Put not off your Cloths in the presence of Others, nor go out your Chamber half Drest. Seems like a good idea, yes?
Well yes, although one would hope it to be obvious!!
Oooh, definitely this one:
“4th In the Presence of Others Sing not to yourself with a humming Noise, nor Drum with your Fingers or Feet.”
Why? Well.. During thesis writing, the boyfriend has been fanatically drumming with his fingers, ALL THE TIME. We’re calling it left over energy & nerves because he hasn’t been cycling like he used to. But it is driving me insane. I kind of want to copy & paste that list and post it on the toilet or something
Then again, he would probably retaliate with this one:
“18th Read no Letters, Books, or Papers in Company but when there is a Necessity for the doing of it you must ask leave: come not near the Books or Writings of Another so as to read them unless desired or give your opinion of them unask’d also look not nigh when another is writing a Letter.”
I’m very happy to ask leave to go away and read by myself!
I’ve heard so much good about this book, I’d love to be in with a chance to win it. Nice giveaway!
I like this one: “23d When you see a Crime punished, you may be inwardly Pleased; but always shew Pity to the Suffering Offender.”
So I’ll go “So sorry your head has to come off!” {Turning away, chuckle, chuckle}.
Mwahahaha
